NJHS

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is a student leadership organization that consists of middle school chapters nationwide. National Junior Honor Society was established to recognize outstanding middle level students, and its primary purpose is to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of character, scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship.

Each chapter sets its own membership selection criteria which is based on teacher recommendation, community service, and achievement at an exceptional level.  Community service hours can include the following settings: school, outside organizations or the community at large.

Eligibility for application to NJHS in 8th grade is based on overall GPA for 6th & 7th grade.

  • For the 2023-2024, students must have earned a 92 or better in seven of the eight quarters.

    • This is a new policy for AMD.  In previous years at AMD, students must have earned a 92 or better for all eight quarters in 6th and 7th grade, however Ms. Blye and Mrs. Casey (2023-2024 NJHS co-advisors) have amended the previous policy to be responsive to the needs of the students and will now allow one quarter's GPA to be dropped in the calculation for initial eligibility. Before the end of the first quarter of 8th grade, advisors will determine initial eligibility for application to NJHS and notify students of their status.
  • Students will be notified if they are eligible to apply for NJHS and will be invited to an informational meeting during the school day, at which time the AMD NJHS application (reflecting character, scholarship, service, leadership and citizenship) will be shared.

    • Successful completion of the application as well as an overall GPA of 92 or better in the first three quarters of 8th grade is a requirement for students to continue their journey toward induction.

  • Students will be notified about the status of their application in January 2024, and will receive notification of any changes to their status based on grades or other factors in a timely fashion.

  • All eligible students must participate in a group community service project in the spring of 2024 in order to be recommended for the NJHS induction in June.

More detailed information will be shared with students directly by Ms. Blye and Mrs. Casey.
